Skin Concern

Acne

A medical-led, evidence-based approach to acne — treating the cause, not just the symptoms.

Overview

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions we see at CARA — and one of the most misunderstood. It is not caused by poor skincare or anything you are doing wrong. It is a medical skin condition that responds to the right combination of professional treatment, medical-grade skincare and honest, structured support.

What You Might Notice

  • Whiteheads and blackheads
  • Inflamed spots and pustules
  • Painful cystic or nodular breakouts
  • Persistent redness and uneven texture
  • Scarring or dark marks left behind after breakouts settle

Why It Happens

Acne has multiple drivers — hormones, genetics, skin barrier function, bacteria and the skin's own oil production. Most breakouts are not caused by the products you are using. Treating acne effectively means understanding which drivers are at play for you, which is why we always start with a skin assessment.

How We Diagnose This

We Start by Understanding Your Skin

OBSERV® 520x skin analysis reveals what is happening on and beneath the surface — including the drivers behind acne. This is where every plan at CARA begins.

How We Treat Acne

We treat acne in a structured, layered way. First, we assess your skin properly — including with OBSERV® imaging to identify congestion and inflammation beneath the surface. We then build a plan that combines medical-grade skincare (often Obagi Medical® or AlumierMD®), in-clinic treatments such as facials, peels and Dermalux® LED therapy, and acne management education. For patients with scarring, SkinPen® microneedling is clinically proven to improve acne scars. We are honest about what will work and how long it takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes. Obagi Medical® includes prescription-only ingredients where appropriate, and these are prescribed and supervised by our nurse prescriber. Not everyone needs prescription treatment — we tailor the plan to you.

Most acne plans take 8-12 weeks to show meaningful change, and longer for full results. Acne treatment is a process, not a single appointment. We will be honest about what to expect.

Yes. Once active acne is under control, SkinPen® microneedling is clinically proven for acne scarring. We would typically settle the acne first, then move on to scar treatment.

Often, yes. Many over-the-counter products make acne worse. We will review what you are using at your consultation and guide you through any changes.
